No glitz and glamour in this authentic Alaskan village, the largest town on Chichagof Island. Learn about the culture and day-to-day lives of the 800 residents. Shop at small stores and grab a bite of food at a local eatery. The port area, with most of the shops, restaurants, and excursion meet-up spots in Icy Strait Point, is the place to start. The new Wilderness Landing Pier provides additional beach and forest leisure areas for tourists. We all love it, so we did it in three out of our seven cruise ports. We kayaked in the extremely calm waters in Hoonah right off Port Frederick/ Icy Strait. You will see eagles and perhaps humpback or orca whales and Dall’s porpoises.
And, the good news is – the chances are high that you will see one (or more) while on the ship. However, a guided whale-watching tour at this destination is the best way to view them.
